Brian Cassey, Alf at 100 (PEOPLE 2023)

Now one hundred years old, aboriginal Elder and Order of Australia recipient Alf Neal OAM sits on the verandah of his home in the indigenous community of Yarrabah in far north Queensland. Alf - a former sugar cane cutter, bush lawyer, baker and activist - was a leader in the decades long fight for the 1967 referendum which eventually resulted in Indigenous peoples historic recognition in Australia’s Constitution. He was awarded the ‘Medal of the Order of Australia’ (OAM) for "Service to the Aboriginal community, particularly the 1967 Referendum Campaign". As Alf passes the one hundred year milestone, Australia is once again poised to vote on National indigenous issues ... with the "Indigenous Voice To Parliament" or "Voices" campaign gaining momentum before a referendum later this year to ratify a voice to Parliament and Government on matters relating to the social, spiritual and economic wellbeing of the an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander population..
