Portrait of Aunty Betty, archival pigment print, handcrafted dyes from Brown Bloodwood Eucalyptus bark, Ilford creative emulsion, on 100% cotton fibre paper. 2022. 45x55cm 1/3 Aunty Betty is 94 years of age, an artist, a passionate sportswoman, and was a strong advocate and speaker for the 1967 referendum, campaigning for change for Indigenous Australians to be counted as part of the population; that they could vote. Aunty Betty spoke out at rally's across three states- NSW, ACT and Victoria, a passionate and spirited woman, the referendum was successful thanks to activists such as Aunty Betty - an inspiration to us all. This portrait of Aunty Betty has been created through a developed process of making handcrafted dyes from Eucalyptus bark, then dyeing cotton rag paper. Once dried it is then coated with an Ilford Creative Emulsion. This process was developed to connect the portrait back to Country as a way of respecting Indigenous culture and relationship to Country. The photograph was taken on a Mamiya RZ67 film camera on Tmax 400 BW film, hand developed.
