Jacqueline Leal, Cloud Catcher (PLACES 2024)

Last year, during my first visit to Cairns, I took the Kuranda Scenic Railway and was captivated by the lush landscapes and rich history of the region. Amidst this journey, I captured a photo of a majestic mountain crowned with clouds. The scene felt almost magical, like a sorcerer's mountain from a cartoon, with clouds swirling ominously around its peak. To me, this image evokes the deep connection to the ancient Aboriginal heritage, so intertwined with nature, while the plantation in the foreground signifies the colonial encounters. It represents the many stories, mysticism, and tragedies that have shaped this enchanting place.
