Joel Leske, Old pier (PLACES 2022)

On the border between South Australia and Western Australia sits a small town called Eucla, with a population of 53 people. In the 1800’s, a telegraph station was built in the town and it became a vital link between Adelaide and Albany. A pier was built to offload supplies shipped to the region. However in the 1890’s a rabbit plague destroyed much of the vegetation on the surrounding sand dunes, causing large sand drifts to impact the town, which was reestablished further north. This beautiful old pier, whilst derelict, remains in place after more than 100 years to reminder us of the history this historic town.
