Steve Nicholls, Scars of the Past (PEOPLE 2023)

Photographing self harm is a tricky thing. I made this portrait in an attempt to mirror how I first noticed Jaz's self harm scars and the conversation that followed. The scars are subtle, you don't notice them at first. You can have an entire conversation and never notice the marks. But then you do, and they see you noticing, and they're looking at you and wondering what you're thinking - what judgements you're potentially making about them. Neither of you know each other well enough for that discussion yet, so assumptions are made on both sides.
