Brendan Jack, The Crucible (PLACES 2023)

The heritage, bottle-shaped, kilns at Bendigo Pottery were the crucible that drove much of the urban development of Victoria and southern NSW. From the underground pipes for sewers and stormwater; through the bricks, tiles and pavers for the buildings; to the tableware for households and restaurants. The intense fire of the kilns ran around the clock, creating essential wares to last lifetimes from basic, humble ingredients.
