Fiona Birt, The Nomad (PEOPLE 2023)

Kyizom is a Tibetan drokpa, a nomad from the high pastures of Amdo who spent much of her youth on horseback herding yaks and other livestock. Her slingshot skills are truly impressive; the loud crack as the slingshot cuts through the air is a sound to be marvelled. The Australian way of life is very strange to Kyizom and her husband, and with limited English language skills, they keep a very low profile in the community they now call home. In contrast to her adept slingshot skills, Kyizom’s shyness at being in front of the camera was heart-warming and endearing.
