Bernadette Heald, The View (PLACES 2023)

What is left once we have shed our mortal coil and departed this earth? This image was taken at the Port Arthur Historic Site in Tasmania, where I found myself contemplating my own personal response to the surroundings while exploring this iconic landscape, viewing vestiges of the past. As an artist and photographer, I am intrigued by the simple raw beauty that can be found in nature, this inspires me to recreate thought provoking artworks and photographs. I chose to shoot mainly in black and white, as the absence of colour allows me to focus on the strength in the basic form, shape and composition of the shot. My photography style gives me the freedom to develop a minds eye view of what once was, capturing a moment in time that will never be seen again.
